Laurium was famous in Classical antiquity for its silver mines, which was one of the chief sources of revenue of the Athenian state. The metallic silver was mainly used for coinage. The Archaeological Museum of Lavrion shows much of the story of these mines.
Today that is no longer working the mines, the city is moving in its own quiet pace. The visitor can enjoy it (just 4km from Cape Villa), do a quick walk in the port city, stop for a coffee and cake in one of the bars, to taste delicious seafood and drink Greek wine or ouzo in one of the many nice tavernas.
